Zone Mixte – Consultat Voltaire

Overview:
Art direction and visual identity design for Le Fesses-tival, an annual festival based in Geneva, exploring bodies, identities and sexualities. Each edition revolves around a specific theme and brings together concerts, performances, talks and workshops. For the 2023 edition, themed around “Fire”, we developed a flexible graphic system designed to ensure visual consistency across print, digital and on-site applications.

Challenges:

Developing a visual system capable of expressing the energy and symbolism of “Fire” while maintaining clarity and coherence across formats. Particular attention was given to avoiding reductive or stereotypical representations in the selection and deployment of imagery.

A background color system structuring the different segments of the 2023 edition, from general communication to evening events, cinema screenings and exhibitions.

The poster initiates the visual identity, with the title set ablaze against a flame background and information structured in a dynamic diagonal layout. Set in Pic Nic by Velvetyne Type Foundry, the fluid letterforms enhance the sense of movement.

For the exhibition “Embrace”, curated by Danniel Tostes and Lari Medawar at Ford (6–27 Sept. 2023), a dedicated pink tone was introduced, inspired by key installations within the show.

Visuals for the night events featuring a darker adaptation of the identity, extended across posters, social media and animated flame projections displayed behind performers during the shows.

Social media extended the four-colour identity system through animated backgrounds, bold typography and flame illustrations, creating distinct visual codes for each program segment.

The festival’s visual identity extended across merchandise, including embroidered caps, T-shirts, stickers and reusable cups, integrating the iconic butt logo with flame motifs.
